SMU was incorporated in 2000 to become the first private university in Singapore to be financed by the government. In 2005, the University moved to its present location in downtown, to the area close to Singapore’s main street, Orchard Road. Today, SMU is home to over 5,400 students and comprises six schools: Lee Kong Chian School of Business, School of Accountancy, School of Information Systems – with which IT-renowned Carnegie Mellon University is playing a strategic partnership role. For expansion and strategic reasons, the School of Economics and Social Sciences was restructured in March 2007 into two schools namely, the School of Economics and the School of Social Sciences. A new School of Law was opened in August 2007.
