Excerpt from course description

Art and Design Industries

Introduction

Art and Design Industries provide an introduction to value creation and its communication in the art and design industries. The course is relevant for students interested in building foundational knowledge and critical skills in exploring how the art, museum, cultural heritage, and design industries are organized, how these industries create value, and how value is communicated for audiences, customers, and other stakeholders. The course investigates these topics from both the perspective of those working within the art and design industries, as well as from the perspective of ‘non-creative’ businesses looking to utilize processes or partnerships from the art and design industries to creative value.

The course follows a modular structure that covers four key topics in art and design as industries. Module 1 provides an overall framing of what we mean by art and design. We map major actors, their relational networks, and the forms and logics of power in these industries. Module 2 provides a introduction to key methods and processes of creating value (both economic and non-economic) in art and design, including the value impact of recent technological innovation. Module 3 explores issues critical to communication, marketing and branding in art and design. Module 4 explores funding, collaboration and partnership opportunities and challenges for organizations and activities in art and design.
