Topics in Search Theory II

Introduction

The aim of the course is to learn students how to solve numerically, simulate and structurally estimate such models. The students learn how to structurally estimate search models using register data, which are ideal for that purpose. The course gives general insights in structural estimation techniques using register data that goes beyond search models. Teaching is very much “hands on”, and the students will themselves program up and calibrate search models between the lectures and hence require the necessary skills to do structural estimation. These are very valuable skills for Ph.D. candidates in all parts of economics.

Course content

The DMP model and optimal unemployment insurance. The Burdett-Mortensen model. Fixed-point theorems. Value function iterations. Programming in Matlab.
