Research and academic activity
2024 was another year with high academic activity.
At BI, we prioritise excellent research that enhances business practices, addresses societal challenges, and contributes to the global knowledge base. Teaching should be research-based, practically relevant to students and of high quality. BI's academic activities are organised in nine departments and eight research centres representing spearheads in our research.
Our researchers deliver high-quality research at an international level, and BI is a partner in several research projects. Research from BI is published in renowned scientific journals. At the same time, our research community contributes to BI's ability to deliver high-quality research-based education.
- Publication points for BI in 2024 were 524, a slight decrease compared to the record year 2023 with 535 points.
- The total number of publications decreased from 409 in 2023 to 372 in 2024, while the number of publications in top journals reached its highest level ever.
- BI received MNOK 42.2 in externally funded research projects in 2024.
- In 2024, 63% of externally funded research projects had a project owner.
It is essential that our researchers and lecturers continually develop and acquire new expertise to provide research-based and practically relevant teaching. In 2024:
- 15,750 physical lectures were held at BI.
- 2,400 digital teaching sessions were held at BI (streaming on Panopto/Zoom).
- 10 doctoral students submitted their doctoral thesis.
- Seven of BI's faculty were promoted to professors:
- Peter Kalum Schou
- Klemens Knöferle
- Pengfei Wang
- Hans-Martin Straume
- Alexander Sønderland Skjønberg
- Thomas Hoholm
- Michael Kisser
Through long-term collaborations, we maintain close connections with society and business. Experience and expertise from business provide important transfer value to BI, including the ability to provide practically relevant teaching to our students. At the same time, our research and teaching must reflect business needs.
Six business representatives are employed as Executive in Residence:
- Jostein Tvedt, Chief Strategist at Danske Bank - Department of Strategy and Entrepreneurship
- Tom Remlov, former opera director and theatre director - Department Leadership and Organisational Behaviour
- Sindre Støer, head of Norwegian Securities Markets Association (Verdipapirforetakenes Forbund) - Department of Law and Governance

BI's academics contribute their expertise to society in various ways, for example, by participating in councils and committees, through involvement in significant research projects, or by excelling in other capacities. Some examples from last year:
