Responsible AI use for public safety

Artificial intelligence is already shaping public safety and public services. How can we use it responsibly while ensuring privacy and other human rights?

This event presents key findings from the international research project AI4Citizens: Responsible AI for Citizen Safety in Future Smart Cities. A light lunch will be available for registered participants from 12:30.

Partners BI, NTNU, the University of Agder, and the Centre for AI and Robotics at the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute will present their work, followed by a panel discussion with academics, practitioners, and policymakers on the implications of AI in public spaces.

The event will cover:

  • Citizen evaluations and drivers of acceptance in high-risk AI contexts.
  • Transparency and trust in the responsible AI implementation for public safety.
  • Anonymized crowd monitoring: solutions and challenges.
  • Contextual video object search for crime investigation: solutions and challenges.
  • Actionable policy recommendations.

The research project was carried out between 2021 and 2026 and was funded by the Research Council of Norway.
