Along with presentation, the summit will feature interactive experiences and cross-disciplinary exchange. The summit will create a space for educators to share ideas, critically examine the opportunities and challenges of AI in the classroom and get a flying start to the autumn semester at BI.

Keynote by: Carsten Bergenholtz - Aarhus University

Bergenholtz's AMLE paper has been shared widely, including within BI. When researching AI in education they found that when students get GenAI access in ill-defined, time-pressured exams, weaker students improve while stronger students seem to struggle. The mechanism is argued to be GenAI-Induced Cognitive Load Inversion: if you don’t have prior understanding, getting AI-generated information can be helpful. Yet, if you have prior relevant information, getting additional AI output could disrupt rather than support a problem-solving process.

In this keynote, Bergenholtz argues that the GenAI challenge in higher education is fundamentally pedagogical, not technical. Institutions must help students develop the domain expertise and metacognitive capacity that is needed to work well with GenAI. This entails considering how and where to teach about GenAI, as well as thinking about the overall assessment portfolio of a given degree.  More than narrow GenAI literacy, students need to learn when AI supports or disrupts learning – with the overall aim of maintaining friction in the learning process.

Lunch will be served.
