Record number of publications in top journals

9 April 2025

Publication data for 2024 shows faculty increasingly publish in leading international scientific journals. Overall publication points remain on par with 2023.

Each spring, the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills compiles publication numbers for Norwegian research institutions. The numbers give an indication of research activity.

“At BI, we prioritise high-quality research that improves business practices, solves societal challenges, and contributes to the global knowledge base. These publication numbers show that we are headed in the right direction,” says Provost for Research and Societal Impact Ingunn Myrtveit.

BI uses the ranking by the Chartered Association of Business Schools (ABS), which assesses the quality of scientific journals within business and management on a scale from 1-4* (4 star). Journals ranked 4 and 4* are among the foremost in their fields globally. In addition, the Financial Times compiles its own list of scientific journals tied to its business school rankings. For 2024, there was marked increase for the two highest journal categories ABS 4 and ABS 4* (see graph) and journals on the FT list. The total number of publications declined from 409 in 2023 to 372 in 2024, while publications in the top journals increased to their highest ever level, reflecting BI's focus on quality over quantity. Publication points remain at the same level declining slightly from 535 to 524.

"The best scientific journals are characterized by outstanding scientific quality and high citation counts. Citations are an important indication that the research is relevant to others and is being used. Quantity does not equal quality in terms of publication numbers. Publishing in the journals where cutting edge scientific development takes place requires more time and more work,” says Luk Warlop, Dean of Research at BI.

On publication points per full-time equivalent member of faculty, BI ranks nr. 6 in Norway. Top 10 are:

  1. The Norwegian School of Sports Sciences (1,80)
  2. University of Oslo (1,64)
  3. University of Bergen (1,39)
