The group of four experts will draft a report on the country's currency options, assessing the pros and cons of maintaining the Icelandic króna versus joining a larger currency area, namely the euro.Professor Bjørnland, a leading expert in applied macroeconomics and monetary policy, brings a wealth of experience to this important work. The committee will be led by Catherine L. Mann, former Chief Economist at the OECD. Other members include Professor Steinar Holden of the University of Oslo and Stijn Claessens, formerly of the Bank for International Settlements.
"I look forward to contributing to this important work. Iceland’s exploration of whether to keep its own currency or adopt the euro raises questions that are also relevant for Norway. Understanding the trade-offs between monetary independence and the stability of a larger currency area is crucial for informed debates in both countries,” said Bjørnland.
The committee's report is expected to be submitted in the first half of next year and will serve as a platform for public discussion on Iceland's currency policy.
