BI researchers awarded EU funding

Erna Engebrethsen and Mehdi Sharifyazdi will investigate logistics and maritime infrastructure for Carbon Capture Storage and Transportation (CCS) in the Nordic and Baltic regions.

“This is an exciting opportunity for BI to contribute to the deployment of emission reduction technologies. CCS is especially relevant for the emitters representing hard to abate industries such as steel, cement, chemical production, currently contributing to 20% of global emissions,” says Associate Professor Engebrethsen.

The interdisciplinary project, called LogiCCS, consists of 15 partners across Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Latvia, and is headed by the Swedish research institute RISE. BI leads the project’s logistics and operations research stream, cooperating with industrial partners and researchers from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) and Sintef Ocean in Norway.

The LogiCCS project has been awarded funding of EUR 2.7 million from the EU, a quarter of which is allocated to the Norwegian partners. BI has also secured additional financing contributions from industrial partners such as Horisont Energy, Hydro and Equinor.

The funding comes through the EU`s Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETP), which aims to promote research and development programmes in European member states and associated countries to accelerate the energy transition. The programme is co-financed among the states, with the Research Council of Norway contributing funding for Norwegian partners.

The project will run through 2028 and is expected to deliver actionable insights for policy makers and industry.
