Introduction
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing corporations and business functions. AI algorithms are used as support for a variety of managerial tasks, and as an active assistant and co-worker. In that way, they are critical tools that facilitate, enhance, but also adversely affect human decision making. In this course, we will explore the foundational issues that comprise current developments in artificial intelligence in business functions, and conceptualize future scenarios for business and society, and deliberate on the possible economic and ethical outcomes of AI implementations. The course takes perspectives from communication, innovation and strategy, marketing, business analytics, data science, and economics.
The course provides insights into working with AI through theorizing and practical examples, enhancing the practical applicability through guest lectures from different business professionals who shed light on their work with AI. They will highlight opportunities and challenges of relying on AI in various business contexts, and critically review the use and misuse of AI.
Students will be encouraged to collaborate in cross-disciplinary teams to present and write an assignment.
Course content
The course is taught by an interdisciplinary team across academic departments and focuses on the following topics:
- AI is used in firms today, where the hype is, and what “good” looks like in an AI-enabled business decision.
- Minds, machines, and the limits of AI.
- The building blocks behind common AI applications.
- Generative AI and Creativity. Practical overview of large language models.
- Wicked problems and systems thinking for AI solutions.
- Marketing and AI: user needs, adoption, and value proposition.
- Strategy and AI: value creation and operating model.
- Innovation and entrepreneurship with AI.
- Leadership and AI: skills, change, and work redesign.
- Business case for AI: costs, benefits, uncertainty, and risk.
- Law, and reputation in AI use
The workshops focus on the practical implications of AI for business functions and take the students through a to be developed prototype from the design phase, through development, marketing, and scale-up stages.
