Introduction
In this course, students are introduced to the parts of the entertainment industries that are based on mediated communication, including the film, television, book, music and gaming industries. The course addresses the characteristics of these industries and discusses them in relation to adjacent industries. The entertainment industries create value through experiences that create new emotions as well as feelings of familiarity in the audience. Mediated entertainment products are often complex in the sense that they are the result of collaboration between many actors with artistic, technical and business backgrounds. They are not tied to time and place in the same way as the live industries, and digital technology has made entertainment markets virtually borderless. In addition to focusing on the five industries, the course includes perspectives on entertainment products, markets and business models, entertainment consumption, branding and marketing, and technology development.
