Practical Information

Study Permit

You may need a study permit to live in Norway for more than three months. See which immigration rules apply to you.

Immigration rules differ according to your citizenship and what type of student you are. The information below is intended for full-time degree seeking students. Exchange students will receive information about immigration procedures to Norway after their admission to BI.

Students with citizenship from outside EU/EEA and Switzerland:  Study Permit

Please visit The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration, known as UDI, UDI’s website for information about the study permit application process according to your citizenship. Follow the link Want to Apply to see what applies to you, and follow all the steps carefully. Please pay particular attention to any notifications related to the study level
and the likelihood of a study permit being granted.

We strongly recommend that you apply for your study permit as soon as you have received your offer of admission from BI. The approval process for a study permit can take up to eight weeks after it is submitted online. You can check for the steps you need
to take in the Student Portal once you have a signed study contract.

Important: July 1 is the application deadline set by UDI in order to receive a decision on your application in time for the start of the academic year.

Application Fee for a Study Permit: NOK 5,400 payable to the Norwegian Government. Please note that the amount is subject to change.

Degree-seeking students with citizenship from outside EU/EEA and Switzerland: Proof of Finance

The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) requires you to transfer money to a  UDI
Residence Permit Deposit Account deposit account in order to secure a study permit (please note that this does not apply to exchange students from BI's partner universities).

The amount you will be required to deposit is one year of tuition fees and one year of living expenses in a UDI Residence Permit Deposit Account. For the 2026-2027 academic year, you can expect to deposit around NOK 315,000 for bachelor or NOK 353 000 for MSc studies (exact amount will be confirmed on your invoice from SiO - see below). You will be required to show a year of tuition fees and living expenses in your Norwegian bank account when you renew your study permit for each subsequent academic year.

UDI Residence Permit Deposit Account

The Student Welfare Organization of Oslo (SiO) manages the UDI Residence Permit Deposit Accounts.

SiO is the welfare organization for educational institutions in Oslo which provides students with products and services to make student life efficient and stimulating. SiO is also the primary provider of student housing in Oslo.

Only students from outside the EU/ EEA and Switzerland with a Study Contract from BI Norwegian Business School can use the UDI Residence Permit Deposit Account.

In order to open a UDI Residence Permit Deposit Account you must first register as a SiO user here. After you have successfully registered, go to “My Page” -> “UDI Residence Permit Deposit Account” and follow the instructions.

Once you have registered for an account, BI will verify your enrolment status. After that, you will be invoiced by SiO for the amount you need to transfer to your UDI Residence
Permit Deposit Account. The invoice will include bank account details for the transfer of funds.

Once you have paid the invoice and SiO receives the funds, SiO will issue a confirmation letter which you need for your study permit application. It may take up to 10-14 working days for you to receive this confirmation because international money transfers take time to process from a bank in your home country to a bank in Norway. Enrolled students can find more detailed information on the Student Portal to guide them through the Study Permit application process.

Important: Deadline to deposit funds in your UDI Residence Permit Deposit Account: June 15.

Note: For international students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland who are enrolled at Campus Bergen, you will receive different instructions about the process to
deposit your first year of tuition and your first year of living expenses.

You do not need a study permit to study in Norway, but you must register online after arrival (not before) at selfservice.udi.no. Please wait for further instructions from your programme administration at BI.
