Methodological challenges and choices when conducting qualitative research in international business contexts

This paper reflects on the methodological and ethical challenges and decisions involved in the process of conducting a qualitative study. The context was the introduction of a new corporate policy – global leave for fathers in four multinational corporations (MNCs). Combining discourse analysis of corporate communication with interviews, the research explored how the policies were presented, experienced and implemented. The paper highlights the complexities of positionality, capturing subjective narratives, navigating ethical considerations, and maintaining reflexivity throughout the research process. By sharing these reflections, it offers practical insights for PhD students embarking on a qualitative research journey, emphasising the importance of adaptability and critical self-awareness in producing meaningful findings.
