We are witnessing a growing politicization of business leaders in the marketplace: They are advocating for societal issues, supporting or opposing economic policies, or their organizations are taking a stance on issues such as diversity or sustainability. Particularly in the US there has been an increase in this type of activism by CEOs tied to key election issues such as LGBTQ, abortion, being ‘woke’, immigration, etc. Business leaders’ influence on and involvement in political issues reflect the intertwined nature of business and politics in contemporary society. This involvement can lead to increased political awareness and activism but can also contribute to societal polarization and changes in public perception. We also see signs of this in Norway, but it is not clear how the political parties are influencing it in Norway or if their constituencies are influencing them by their stand on these issues.
This seminar looks at the use of strategic communication and corporate branding in how CEOs are used to profile their organizations. We ask: is CEO-politicization something all leaders and/or their organizations should engage in – or be encouraged to engage in?
Our invited keynote speaker, Professor Andrea Römmele, will look at these issues through her latest studies of the current presidential elections in the US. This will be followed by a round table discussion where representatives of both political parties as well as communication experts will respond (see speaker information below).
The seminar is organized by #NORA – The Nordic Alliance for Communication and Management, a pan-Nordic think tank that leverages communication excellence through a close exchange on best practices paired with high-level scientific reflection from latest research. Leading communication executives from renowned companies meet with communication and management to jointly identify emerging trends and topics, develop new research-based knowledge, and shape the debate in the Nordic countries.
