He has been researching and teaching freight transport / logistics since the late 1970s and published extensively in journals, books and reports on many different aspects of the subject. Much of his research over the past twenty years has focused on the relationship between logistics and climate change. In addition to his academic work, Alan has been an advisor to companies, governments and international organizations, including the European Commission, International Transport Forum, World Bank and World Economic Forum and UN.
He holds a PhD in International Business from WU Vienna University of Economics and Business and joined NHH in 2022, where he currently leads the Strategy Group.
As a member of DIG - Norway's leading research centre on digital transformation and innovation for sustainable growth at NHH - his research and teaching explore how multinational enterprises navigate an increasingly complex global environment shaped by geopolitical tensions, digital transformation, sustainability challenges, growing demands for resilience, and an increasing emphasis on strategic autonomy among nation states.
Gunnar received his Ph.D. in 2004 from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, based on his research that involving transport management focusing on collaboration, digitalization, efficiency, and means to reduce environmental impacts of transport operations including rural and the Arctic areas. As Vice Precedent UArctic, Gunnar is responsible for strategic collaboration within the UArctic immense network of more than 250 universities, Arctic and non-Arctic, within the network of the Arctic countries and beyond.
