Abstract:
Research with AI: Lessons from math research and some reflections on what comes next
AI is rapidly becoming a powerful tool for scientific research. In mathematics, recent models can already contribute to problem solving, proofs, coding, writing, and the exploration of new ideas. Several recent breakthroughs in long standing mathematical research problems confirms this.
In this talk, I will share some personal experiences from working closely with AI in applied mathematical and data scientific research, discuss what current models can and cannot do, and reflect on where this development may lead. Rather than asking whether AI will replace researchers, I will focus on how we can use increasingly capable AI systems to become better researchers: exploring more ideas, working across disciplines, testing arguments faster, and spending more time on the questions, judgement and creativity that matter.
I will also offer some thoughts on how AI may change research practice, supervision and scientific publishing in the years ahead.
The DataScience@BI seminar is organised by the Department of Data Science and Analytics, BI Norwegian Business School.
