Abstract:
A standard error describes sampling variation and little else. It does not tell you whether the code runs, whether another analyst would have made the same choices, or whether the facts the design rests on are correct. Using two large collaborations published in April 2026, attempts to correct published papers, and the longer history of the specification-search debate, we ask how much confidence a single quantitative result deserves and what researchers and institutions can do about it.
