21 January 2026BI Norwegian Business School is strengthening its academic community by appointing one of Norway’s leading experts in EU and EEA law. Gjermund Mathisen will join BI on 1 July 2026. He is currently a partner at Kvale Law Firm.
The appointment represents a significant strengthening of BI’s expertise in EU and EEA law. Mathisen brings an exceptional background from some of the most important institutions within European legal cooperation.
Mathisen previously served as Director of State Aid and Competition Law at the EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) and has experience from both the European Commission and the EFTA Court. As a member of ESA’s Legal Service, he represented ESA in approximately 30 cases before the EFTA Court, the Court of Justice of the European Union and the General Court in Luxembourg. Mathisen has also been appointed as an ad hoc judge of the EFTA Court.
– “His in-depth knowledge of the relationship between Norwegian law and EU/EEA law, as well as how the various processes work in practice within the EU and EEA, makes him an invaluable resource for both our students and colleagues at BI. EEA law is relevant across all areas of law, and we will now have direct access to this expertise right here in our department,” says Eivind Furuseth, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Law and Governance at BI.
Mathisen will take up the position of Professor at BI Norwegian Business School on 1 July 2026.
– “Leaving Kvale and the wonderful people there will be bittersweet, but I am also very much looking forward to conducting research and teaching at BI from this summer. I look forward to becoming part of the academic community and contributing to legal education at BI,” says Gjermund Mathisen, currently a partner at Kvale.
