AI at BI

AI at BI

Artificial intelligence is transforming the workplace, research, and the way we learn. BI aims to contribute knowledge about how this technology affects business and society, and to equip students with the skills they need to understand and use AI.

Artificial intelligence in research

BI conducts research that helps businesses and decision makers understand how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used, the implications of the technology, and how it can be adopted responsibly.

A key area of research is how AI is being adopted in organisations and the workplace. Research at BI examines, among other things, how AI and algorithms affect leadership, collaboration and decision making. This provides important knowledge about both the opportunities and risks organisations face as they develop new ways of working and seek to use AI responsibly.

BI also has research communities focusing on responsible AI, regulation and the broader societal implications of the technology. Through research projects and interdisciplinary collaboration with other research communities, BI contributes to a better understanding of how artificial intelligence can be developed and used in ways that safeguard trust and ethical considerations.

AI research at BI

  • How AI affects working life, leadership and decision making
  • Responsible AI, AI regulation and privacy
  • How AI affects culture and creativity
  • How AI is changing digital platforms and visibility
  • How AI affects consumers and marketing
  • How large language models portray organisations
  • How AI and machine learning can be used to analyse large datasets
  • How AI can be used in the public sector and in services that affect citizens
  • The accuracy of AI based predictions and how such models can support decision making

Across these areas, BI's research shares a common goal: to develop knowledge that is relevant to business and society.

Research projects at BI

A number of AI related research projects are currently underway at BI. Some examples include:

TRUST

TRUST (The Norwegian Centre for Trustworthy AI) is a national centre for artificial intelligence led by the University of Oslo, with BI as a research partner. TRUST conducts research on trustworthy artificial intelligence, with the aim of developing AI that is accurate, explainable and ethical.

creAlte

creAlte is led by BI's Centre for Creative Industries. Funded by the Research Council of Norway, the project examines how AI and virtual technologies affect the cultural sector. Copyright, authenticity, creativity and economic sustainability are key topics.

EMANAIRE

EMANAIRE is an EU funded doctoral network coordinated by BI. The project will launch in 2027 and examine how generative AI is changing decision making, collaboration and competence development in organisations.

DISTINCT

DISTINCT is led by Christoph Lutz at BI and funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project examines how digital status is created through factors such as follower counts and rankings, and how this in turn affects opportunities and social inequality. The aim is to contribute to fairer platform design and the development of AI systems that are more transparent and accountable.
