Alexander Stagnell is Professor in the Department of Communication and Culture at BI Norwegian Business School specializing in rhetoric. His research sits at the intersection of rhetorical theory, history of ideas, political philosophy, and the study of institutional discourses, with a particular focus on how language shapes and is shaped by political and economic institutions — and what this means for questions of democracy, truth, and public life.
Stagnell holds a PhD in Rhetoric from Uppsala University, where he defended his dissertation The Ambassador's Letter: On the Less Than Nothing of Diplomacy in 2019. A revised version was subsequently published by Routledge as Diplomacy and Ideology: From the French Revolution to the Digital Age (2020). He was previously a visiting PhD Fellow at l'École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, and he has had postdoctoral stints at the Université libre de Bruxelles and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He is affiliated Docent in Rhetoric at Södertörn University and a researcher at the Department of Literature and Rhetoric, Uppsala University.
His current research is funded by Formas – A Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development, and examines the rhetoric of Sweden’s Riksbank in relation to climate change, under the project title Sustainable Economies? Sveriges Riksbank and Climate Change. The project investigates how Sweden's central bank has approached its new sustainability mandate and how it communicates on questions where economic and environmental concerns intersect. Stagnell’s scholarship has appeared in Philosophy & Rhetoric, Filozofski vestnik, and Crisis and Critique, among other venues.
