The Department of Communication and Culture at BI Norwegian Business School is seeking talented applicants for multiple four-year doctoral scholarships beginning in August 2025.
Candidates are encouraged to propose their own research projects within the department's research interests, which include communication technologies such artificial intelligence and social media, the future of work, online communities, technological transformations, the arts in the digital transformation, the creative industries, and innovation in education management. The department, consisting of approximately 50 faculty members, offers a highly international and collaborative environment with ongoing research and industry collaborations. The positions also require 25% teaching responsibilities and will be based at BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo, Norway.

Associate Professor Mona Kristin Solvoll and partners will find out how the media can build innovation capacity. The project ‘Media Innovation Through the Corona Crisis (MICC) - how news media can build and implement innovation ability’ has been awarded NOK 5 million by the Norwegian Research Council's program User-driven innovation arena (BIA). The project starts 1 December 2020 and lasts until 2022 and is in cooperation with OsloMet, Kristiania University College, the Norwegian Media Authority, Kantar and the Department of Journalism, will investigate how news media to a greater extent can create added value for themselves, advertisers, the public and society as a whole.
In a new report from the Cultural Council, the actors in cultural life say that they expect to turn over 45% less in 2021 if the infection control measures are continued. The report was carried out by Menon Economics and BI: CCI on behalf of the Cultural Council, and is based on a survey among more than 4,000 actors in the Norwegian cultural sector.

Drugli is Professor at NTNU and Høgskolen Innlandet, while Lekhal is Associate professor at BI Norwegian Business School.
3 million euros for a BI-led project on the role of art in the digital shift. It is difficult to predict the consequences of the digital shift for values such as democracy, labor rights and privacy. Private companies are setting the pace of change, while governments and civil society often find that they are not listened to. The research project ARTSFORMATION is based on a recognition that art can be a valuable partner for a better digital shift. The Music Industry's Council and the Cultural Council investigate loss of revenue for the music industry as a result of the corona crisis. The purpose of the study is to get a picture of how the corona crisis has affected the music industry and how different measures are being taken. BI Center for Creative Industries is conducting the survey, which encompasses a wide range of music organizations and actors.
New members of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in 2020 are elected. 17 new Norwegian members and 6 foreigners in the Mathematical and Natural Sciences class and in the Class for the Humanities and Social Sciences respectively. Guri Hjeltnes, Director of the The Norwegian Center for Holocaust and Minority Studies, is selected in Group 1, history. She is also Professor at the Department of Communication and Culture, BI.
The other members are Anine Kierulf, Jørn Øyrehagen Sunde, Dag Michalsen and Geir Woxholt who have been elected to the committee who will review all aspects of the "Æresretten" in 1945 and present a recommendation to the next annual meeting in The Norwegian author association.

As an organizational psychologist and BI lecturer, Trond Kjærstad has a good viewpoint, and the theme of his new book is certainly placed in the middle of time: creativity. Don't we have to be more creative all together? But in the meantime, he is finally able to get a thorough and well thought introduction to the subject, where creativity is primarily linked to existence and the question of how we best act in the world, and less to achievements and benefits.

Many academics and journals are pushing to acknowledge and incentivize peer review. The award “makes the often invisible, behind-the-scenes and voluntary work of peer review more visible,” says Christoph Lutz, a communications and culture researcher at BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo, who was also rated as a top reviewer by Publons this year. It’s a nice sign of appreciation and shows that my work as a peer reviewer is being valued, he says.
Bodø Biennal impresses with a diverse and quality-enhanced biennial program and presents this year at many amazing moments. Professor of BI Norwegian Business School, Sigrid Røyseng's lecture on "Dance Space in Culture Policy and Society" was particularly engaging. Røyseng gave an introduction to the explosive development of dance art in recent years and answered later on whether instrumentation of art is a problem. Røyseng was open to the fact that such "use" of the art for another purpose could be positive, not because something is known about the positive effects of art in society, but because people believe in it. When people believe in art and art gets the role of cure, we become healthier, according to Røyseng.
David Guttormsen is a researcher at the Department of Communication and Culture at BI Norwegian Business School, but is currently affiliated with the Waseda University in Tokyo in connection with field work in East Asia. Guttormsen is researching on international HR, and especially for employees who work abroad for shorter or longer periods, so-called expats.
New models to measure the impact of strategic communication have been launched.
In the article "Communication evaluation and measurement: Skills, practices and utilization in European organizations," Ansgar Zerfass and his colleagues document that there are many who lack the necessary knowledge to conduct measurements. Many focus on rather simple goals, such as traffic in social channels, as well as media coverage. Norwegian figures show the same. The BI researchers Alexander Buhmann and Peggy S. Brønn made a survey among the members of the Association, where they further discussed the reasons. The article "Applying Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior to predict practitioners' intentions to measure and evaluate communication" shows how practitioners do not think they have enough tools for the task and also lack resources in terms of budgets, personnel and time.

A new framework for kindergardens came into force on 1 August 2017. Udir has launched an evaluation program to gain knowledge about how the framework plan is implemented and used in practice. The program lasts from 2018-2022, with a total cost framework of 20 million. An external program management has been established to ensure high quality in all aspects of the program, and is the supreme decision-making authority. The program board consists of 6 members, including Ide Katrine Birkeland, Associate Professor at BI. Leader is Henrik Zachrisson, Professor, NUBU.
The Ministry of Culture has appointed a new committee for the state artist grants for the period 2018-2021. One of the members is Sigrid Røyseng, Professor of BI and Professor II at the Norwegian Academy of Music.

Professor Benedicte Brøgger has written a book about social entrepreneurship. She explains social entrepreneurship, what it is, what it covers and how it affects the community and what place social entrepreneurship has in business. She puts social entrepreneurship in larger contexts, both internationally, in Norwegian business and business modeling. The book will be released in March on CappelenDamm Academic Publishing, and launched May 2nd, 10:00-11:00 at the Library, BI Norwegian Business School.
Publisher and industry expert Anitra Guddal Figenschou think too much is hidden behind closed doors in the Norwegian book trade market. Norway is wonderfully well adjusted for book sales, with funding which benefits both publishers, authors and readers, says lecturer II Anitra Guddal Figenschou. She runs her own publishing house, in addition to teaching and research.
The fresh study "Ad + - Potential advertisements for digital local newspapers with user fees", provides valuable insight into Norwegian local newspapers' commercial operation. The study is based on 23 interviews with representatives from the advertising and marketing side in 23 Norwegian local newspapers, as well as a qualitative survey among readers by four of these newspapers.
