60% of BI’s research was relevant to the SDGs in 2024
In previous years, BI conducted a qualitative analysis to identify which of its research articles were relevant to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These analyses are listed below.
More recently, BI has adopted the Web of Science citation database’s automated classification of publications according to the SDGs. This provides an estimate of BI’s research contributions across the different SDGs. The figure below presents a breakdown of BI’s 2024 publications by SDG:

Figure: Number and percentage of BI’s publications in 2024 categorised by Web of Science as relevant to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Of the 371 publications from 2024 listed in the Web of Science Core Collection, 149 (40%) are not categorised as relevant to any SDG, while 222 (60%) are categorised as relevant to at least one SDG. This represents an increase compared with the 2020–2021 report, in which approximately 30% of BI’s publications were identified as relevant to at least one SDG. However, as a different methodology was used at that time, the figures are not directly comparable.
