Her work analyzes European Union rules and regulations and their impact on international trade, including distribution agreements and agency, as well as shipping and transportation.
Eftestøl has contributed to interdisciplinary collaborations that have resulted in books on zero emission transport and digitalization. Her publications address critical issues such as the harmonization of multimodal liability regimes in Europe, the extension of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) to shipping, and legal challenges within Nordic maritime law. She provides insight into how emissions information can change behavior in the transport industry, examining initiatives such as "Fit for 55" and the polluter pays principle within the EU regulatory framework. Her work also addresses the complexities of environmental pathways between the EU and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). She is an expert in distribution agreements and her doctoral thesis examined the remuneration system in the Commercial Agency Directive and its implementation in the Nordic legal systems.
Ellen J. Eftestøl is currently Professor of Law at BI Norwegian Business School and Adjunct Professor at the University of Gothenburg

Previously, she was an adjunct professor at the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law, University of Oslo, and a full professor of civil and commercial law at the University of Helsinki. Her main areas of teaching are contract law, sales law, international trade and transportation.
She received har doctoral degree from the University of Oslo. Eftestøl is a co-founder of the Helsinki-based INTERTRAN research group
